Sepal Bin
2019, BetterBin Competition Entry
A BetterBin for NYC must symbolize the crucial role our Sanitation Department and workforce play in maintaining a healthy and vibrant city. The right design both lessens the physical burden on sanitation workers by incorporating better ergonomics and helps to celebrate our appreciation for this vital system. For too long the NYC green bin has toiled in obscurity and done little to remain top-of-mind for those looking for a spot to place their litter, both for those living in the city and visiting.
Sepal Bin is robust in construction, lighter, and with significantly better ergonomics, all while incorporating a profile and color scheme that is and will remain unmistakably New York.
1. Universal handle and uniquely designed upper to help brand this as unmistakably New York City’s bin.
2. Upper ring to help enhance rigidity.
3. Hexagonal punched wire mesh.
4. A solid panel for messaging. Shown here with two panels, but up to 7 can be covered depending on the location and requirements for branding & messaging.
5. A slick vertical surface, elevated off the ground, to help rodent and insect abatement.
6. Lower ring serves two functions: as a foot for the bin, and as a universal handle when carrying and tipping.
7. Spun metal base is convex and elevated off the ground for better drainage, and eliminates the potential to freeze to the sidewalk in the winter.
8. Full water drainage through mesh or punched holes.
Note: The color of the Sepal Bin is RAL 6027, chosen to reference the oxidized copper cladding of New York’s iconic Statue of Liberty
